What is the Martin Luther King, Jr. Poetry Contest?

The annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Poetry Contest sponsored by the Diversity Council is open to Olmsted County students in grades 3 - 12. Themes and deadlines are announced each year in October, and winners are announced in January.

Theme for the 2020 Contest

Poems for the MLK, Jr. Poetry Contest are based around a yearly theme: a quote by the civil rights leader himself.

This year, students wrote and submitted poems around this quote by King:

"Love yourself, and that means rational and healthy self-interest…That’s the length of life. Then follow that: Love your neighbor as you love yourself â€¦ That’s the breadth of life."
