2017 Annual Report: From the President

As we head into 2018, we on the Diversity Council Board of Directors feel particularly fortunate.   While the news surrounding diversity and inclusion has been challenging and at times confusing, we feel lucky to be a part of both this organization and the greater Rochester community.

We are especially grateful to the many volunteers, donors and partners who have stepped up to support our mission, and we are thankful for our incredibly passionate, knowledgeable and dedicated staff, including our newest staff member Heidi Wilkins.  We are equally excited to welcome new board members Erin Meyer and Nicole Sandhu who we know will infuse new energy and ideas into our mission.

As our city and surrounding communities grow and evolve, the challenges at times seem endless. While we see many jobs being created, we want to make sure that all of our people have the opportunity to not only be part of the prosperity, but to contribute to it.    We want to make sure that all of our people have access to decent housing they can afford, a quality education that includes every student and appreciates both their needs and their gifts, and access to the highest quality health care.

While including all of our diverse populations in our prosperity may seem on the one hand a great challenge, it is also to all of our benefit to seek this inclusion.  Going forward, diversity in this community will be our greatest strength, as a variety of skills, experiences, personalities and ways of thinking are needed to fill the many jobs that will keep this community strong.

It is also important to remember that many of the responsibilities of caring for a community involve work that does not come with a paycheck.    Whether that be caring for our own children or our aging parents, volunteering and getting involved in civic and community organizations, or reaching out to neighbors who need help and support, we all have a role to play, regardless of how much we make, or where we started out.

It is with great hope and optimism but also with great determination that we look forward and move forward.  While the obstacles are significant, the people who have risen to the occasion in supporting this work are up to the challenge!
