Diversity Council's vision bears fruit
Editorial
March 13, 2006
Those responsible for creating and sustaining
Rochester's Diversity Council are to be commended for their efforts
as the council marks its 10-year anniversary.
The council was created in 1989 after a
series of tense, and sometimes violent, conflicts between whites
and blacks. The council got right to work after its inception and
created several programs aimed at public education on racial diversity.
Perhaps the most successful program created by the council is one
that provides workshops for schools.
In the decade since the workshops began,
they've reached more than 100,000 students. The program is set to
be expanded this year to students beyond Rochester.
Leaders such as George Thompson, Jackie
Trotter and Mechelle Severson deserve the community's thanks for
their vision in creating the program, and current Diversity Council
members deserve praise for sustaining and expanding it. Their efforts
have made Rochester a better place to live.
