Gender, sexism explored in community discussion
March 18, 2006
The Diversity Council and University Center
Rochester will lead a community discussion about gender and sexism
on March 30 at the Heintz Center on the Rochester Community and
Technical College campus.
Phrases and terms like "throws like
a girl,""man's man" and "feminazi" might
seem harmless or old-fashioned, but they still reflect our ideas
about gender and gender roles in society. Also, these ideas manifest
themselves in real ways, such as wage disparity, harassment and
unequal opportunities for both men and women.
The Diversity Council and UCR invite men
and women of all races, religions and backgrounds to discuss the
effect of gender and sexism on the community. The event will be
from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Heintz Center Commons at 1926
Collegeview Drive S.E. Diversity Council facilitators will lead
small-group discussions.
The event, called "A Time to Talk:
Dialogue on Gender and Sexism," is part of the 2006 Rochester
Reads program, which features the book "No Horizon Is So Far,"
by Antarctic explorers Anne Bancroft and Liv Arneson.
